We are only 10 kilometers from Roa and 3 kilometers from the Province of Valladolid, where the seat of the “Denominacion de Origen” (D.O.) of Ribera del Duero is located.
The vineyards of Pomar, nourished by the river Duero, lie to the south of Burgos, near the village of Valdezate. Close to the river, the soil is alluvial with layers of chalk, limestone, clay and sand. This soil diversity, combined with hot summers and limited rainfall result in perfect conditions for the cultivation of century old vines, which produce the gift of only a few bunches of grapes per vine each year.
The first “Pomar” appeared in Ribera del Duero at the beginning of the 18th century. Since then, generations of the Pomar family have been dedicated to the cultivation of the vines. Once the wine was produced, it was aged in “La Honda” (The Deep One), the deepest and most unique cellar in Valdezate, which dates from the 13th century.
The vineyards are situated in the center of the D.O. Ribera del Duero.
Our grapes are grown at an altitude of 840 meters (2,500 feet) in an extreme climate of long, cold winters and very hot summers with little rainfall, which results in a limited production of exceptional quality. The grape varietal is locally known as “Tinto del Pais” (Tempranillo).
Our philosophy is to be absolutely respectful of nature and its cycles; we work the vineyards according to ecological guidelines. We use only natural products for the treatment of our vines. In an effort to achieve the best quality, we manually harvest our grapes.
